Serving Chaos
Live Performance (01/20/2006)

The third leg of my trip on 01/20/2006 took me to Rodeitchers, in Freeland Michigan, to catch the last set and a half of Serving Chaos. This band has great dynamics and good stage presence. The leader Lauren Davis, “Ren” was singing when I walked thought the doors. As I walked up she looked at me but she didn’t know who I was until I started snapping pictures. Then she smiled and yelled out “Hi Slippery!” I must tell you that I liked the Rock N Roll atmosphere that they put out in the show with the style of material they play.

It's cool how they list themselves on line.
Ren Davis: Vocals, "The Mean One"
Susan Light: Bass, "The Nice One"
Marty Burk: Drums, "The Goofy One"
Mike Davis: Guitar, "The Enlightened One"

Lauren Davis "Ren" seems to groove to the beat and really works the floor over as she sings. It shows control over the dynamics of the show. With power in her vocals, there’s no wonder why she’s leading the band. She makes a good lead singer and has significant quality behind her voice. It must come from all those hours of hosting the radio station that she used to work at. Now she is the program director of RTR, Review This Radio.

Mike Davis is Ren’s husband. Mike is a very accomplished guitarist! As I watched, he was playing plenty of lead solos and executing a solid rhythm. I really liked the tones he was getting out of his Ibanez guitar and Marshall amp combo. Nice sizzle on his lead riffs.

Marty Burk has a prolonged sense of timing and has a great feel for the dynamics of his drum set. Working with the bassist to hold down the pocket, Marty demonstrated his remarkable sense of beat and dynamic control.

The beautiful Miss Susan Light is a fantastic bassist, and was solid to the core with her attack and phrasings as she played her axe. On break I went up to talk to her and she was truly nice to speak with. She was very cordial and friendly. I think that must be why she is named “The Nice One”. I really liked that about her! Not all ladies are nice to someone with a nick-name like “Slippery”. Usually ladies will RUN!

All in all I thought that Serving Chaos has a real good show, and reveals a good collection of cover tunes. Although I would have loved to hear a full night of their show, I didn’t get there until 60 % of the night was over. Therefore I will be returning to see the show in it’s entirety. I look forward to seeing it and expect nothing less than a top notch gig. And I have no doubt that they will pull off a fantastic evening of entertainment.
